Before You Upgrade: IBM Planning Analytics (TM1) Readiness Guide
The 4-Phase Framework for a Successful On-Premises Upgrade of IBM Planning Analytics, and Where Most Organizations Get It Wrong

20+ Years IBM Planning Analytics
Hundreds of Upgrades Completed
Why This Matters Now
This guide is written for organizations running IBM Planning Analytics On-Premises (Local). General support for IBM Planning Analytics 2.0.9.x ended October 31, 2025. If you are still on 2.0.9.x, you are already running on borrowed time: extended support is available at additional cost, but only through October 31, 2026. After that date, there is no path to a supported version except upgrading. And support status is only half the story. Planning Analytics 2.1 also removes several legacy TM1 tools, including TM1 Architect, TM1 Perspectives, TM1 Applications, Performance Modeler, and Cognos Insight. If your organization still depends on these, an upgrade is not just a technical update. It is a change to how your team plans, reports, and makes decisions.
Version Support Timeline
| Version | Status | Key Date |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0.9.x | Out of general support | Ended October 31, 2025 |
| 2.0.9.x | Extended support (paid add-on) | Closes October 31, 2026 |
| 2.1.x | Current, fully supported | Actively Developed |
| 3.1.x | Current, fully supported | Actively Developed |
What's Changing Between Versions
What You Lose If You Stay on 2.0.9.x
IBM security patches and fixes
TM1 Architect, Perspectives, Applications, Performance Modeler
Cognos Insight
What You Gain by Moving to 2.1.x or 3.1.x
AI-assisted forecasting and modeling
A modern, web-based Planning Analytics Workspace
Broader REST API and reporting integration options
Most IBM Planning Analytics on-prem upgrade issues are not caused by the software. They are caused by hidden dependencies, outdated models, legacy tool gaps, and assumptions no one validated before cutover. Organizations that treat this as a routine IT task, and go it alone without a structured plan, are the ones most likely to discover the problem mid-project, not before it.
22+ Years. Hundreds of Planning Analytics Upgrades: On one recent upgrade, a client's nightly consolidation depended on a TM1 Perspectives macro that nobody on the current team had ever opened. We caught it during the pre-upgrade tool inventory and rebuilt the logic in Planning Analytics Workspace before it broke in production. That is the kind of gap a checklist alone will not catch. Experience does.
The 4 Phases of a Successful On-Prem Upgrade
Every Planning Analytics upgrade moves through the same four phases. What separates a smooth upgrade from a painful one is not the phase, it is whether the risks specific to each phase are caught before they become expensive.
1. Planning
Objective: Define scope, governance, architecture, and success criteria.
Where it breaks: Skipping a full legacy TM1 tool inventory. Teams routinely discover mid-project that a rule or process built in Architect has no documented owner, no version history, and no clear 2.1 or 3.1 equivalent.
2. Execution
Objective: Install, configure, migrate, and document the environment.
Where it breaks: Building the environment without a tested, snapshot-based rollback path. Service account, SSL certificate, and SSO changes are easy to make and expensive to unwind once cutover is underway.
3. Testing
Objective: Execute cutover and transition to support.
Where it breaks: Skipping a genuine parallel-access period. Legacy tool gaps, broken bursting or report links, and workflow confusion tend to surface in week one of live use, precisely when finance can least afford it.
4. Go Live
Objective: Validate technical, business, and decision readiness.
Where it breaks: Testing with sample data instead of real planning-cycle volume. Feeder recalculation timing and TurboIntegrator behavior often only diverge from the old environment once real cube sizes and concurrent users hit the system.
What's in the Full On-Prem Upgrade Plan
This overview is the starting point. The complete Lodestar Planning Analytics Upgrade Checklist goes several levels deeper and includes:
The full task-by-task checklist for all four phases, with owner and due-date tracking
Phase-by-phase risk callouts showing exactly where self-managed upgrades typically fail
Lodestar Best Practice guidance at every phase gate
An Executive Readiness Dashboard and formal sign-off framework for governance and accountability
If you're the one who will actually run this upgrade: you already know the real risk is not the software, it's what's undocumented in your current environment. Our team includes former TM1 administrators who have made these exact calls before. Bring your technical questions to the strategy call. It is built for you as much as for your leadership team.
You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone: An upgrade touches licensing, architecture, legacy dependencies, and the models your leadership relies on to make decisions. Lodestar Solutions has guided organizations through this exact process, and we know precisely where it goes wrong when it is done without a plan.

Ready for the full plan?
Book your 45-minute Upgrade Readiness Assessment and we will send you the complete 4-Phase Upgrade Checklist, built from real Planning Analytics upgrade engagements. You'll speak directly with a senior consultant and IBM Champion, not a sales rep. On the call, we will:
Review your current version and confirm exactly where you stand on the support timeline
Flag the legacy tool and model dependencies most likely to affect your specific environment
Outline what your upgrade path, timeline, and effort would realistically look like
Sessions are led by Heather Cole, Founder and CEO of Lodestar Solutions, and Mike Bernaiche, IBM Analytics Practice Lead. Both are recognized IBM Champions, drawing on over 20 years of exclusively IBM Planning Analytics and Cognos TM1 work.
Do not wait until an unsupported version, a legacy tool dependency, or a planning-cycle deadline creates unnecessary risk.
