Cognos Analytics 12.1.2 Gets Conversational: Meet the New Reporting Agents

Written by Paige Fowler, 03/19/2026

For years, organizations have invested heavily in analytics platforms—yet one challenge persists:

People still struggle to find the right report, interpret what it means, and share insights quickly.

Even in mature analytics environments, teams often waste time:

  • Searching through folders for the right report
  • Asking colleagues where data lives
  • Rebuilding reports that already exist
  • Manually summarizing findings for leadership

IBM’s newest capability in Cognos Analytics 12.1.2—Reporting Agents—aims to solve this problem by introducing conversational AI directly into the reporting experience.

Instead of navigating menus, writing queries, or digging through content libraries, users can simply ask for what they need in plain language.

The system handles the complexity behind the scenes.

Let’s take a look at what’s new—and what it means for organizations using Cognos today.

What Are Reporting Agents in Cognos Analytics?

Reporting Agents are AI-powered assistants embedded directly into Cognos Analytics. They allow users to interact with reports and analytics content through natural language rather than traditional navigation.

These agents help users:

  • Locate reports faster
  • Understand the story behind the data
  • Share insights with the right people
  • Build new reports through conversation

Three of these capabilities are available today, while a fourth is currently in preview.

Currently Available

  • Report Recommendation Agent – helps users find relevant reports instantly
  • Summary Agent – automatically analyzes reports and highlights key insights
  • Share Agent – simplifies distributing reports across teams

In Public Preview

  • Authoring Agent – allows users to generate reports through natural language instructions

Under the hood, these capabilities leverage IBM watsonx.ai and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to deliver context-aware responses grounded in the actual content within your Cognos environment.

The result: analytics that behave more like a conversation than a technical tool.

Finding the Right Report Without the Treasure Hunt

One of the biggest productivity killers in analytics environments is simply finding the right report.

Over time, organizations accumulate hundreds—or thousands—of reports spread across folders and departments.

The Report Recommendation Agent changes how users search for content.

Instead of relying on keywords or knowing exactly where a report lives, users can ask questions such as:

  • “Show me sales performance by region for Q4.”
  • “Where can I see budget variance analysis?”
  • “Find reports related to customer engagement.”

The agent understands the intent behind the request, not just the specific words used. It scans report metadata, descriptions, and content to surface the most relevant options.

For example, a query about “customer retention” might surface reports labeled:

  • churn analysis
  • loyalty metrics
  • customer lifecycle performance

The system then ranks recommendations and explains why each report is relevant.

The result: less time searching and more time analyzing.

Turning Complex Reports into Executive-Ready Insights

Reports often contain valuable insights—but extracting them can take time.

The Summary Agent helps by automatically analyzing a report and producing a clear explanation of what matters most.

Instead of reviewing dozens of charts and tables, users receive a concise summary highlighting:

  • key metrics
  • trends
  • anomalies
  • performance patterns

This is particularly valuable for executives and leaders who need the bottom line quickly.

It also helps analysts interpret reports created by other teams, providing context that might otherwise require digging through documentation.

Think of it as a data briefing generated automatically from your report.

Sharing Insights Without the Manual Work

Analytics only create value when insights are shared.

But distributing reports across teams often involves multiple steps—generating links, sending emails, messaging stakeholders, and ensuring proper access permissions.

The Share Agent simplifies this process.

Users can request distribution conversationally, such as:

“Share this report with the finance team and notify regional managers.”

The system handles the rest by:

  • generating secure links
  • identifying the correct recipients
  • sending the report across supported channels such as email or collaboration platforms

Security policies and permissions remain fully enforced, ensuring sensitive data stays protected.

This removes friction from collaboration and helps insights reach the people who need them faster.

Creating Reports Through Conversation (Preview)

Perhaps the most intriguing capability is the Authoring Agent, currently available in Public Preview.

This feature allows users to generate new reports simply by describing what they want to see.

For example:

“Create a report showing product sales by region and category for Q4.”

The system interprets the request, identifies relevant data elements, and constructs a tabular report structure automatically.

Users can refine the output through follow-up instructions like:

  • “Add customer segment as a filter.”
  • “Change the measure to profit margin.”

While this capability currently focuses on crosstab reports, it represents a significant step toward lowering the barrier to analytics creation.

Business users who once depended on IT to build reports can now begin exploring data themselves.

The Technology Behind Reporting Agents

Reporting Agents rely on several AI technologies working together.

The platform uses large language models powered by IBM watsonx.ai to interpret user requests and generate responses.

To ensure accuracy, the system incorporates retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which grounds responses in actual content from your Cognos environment rather than relying solely on model training.

A supervisory layer coordinates specialized agents for different tasks—search, summarization, sharing, and authoring—creating a multi-agent workflow.

Importantly, all actions operate within Cognos’ existing framework for:

  • security permissions
  • audit logging
  • access controls
  • encryption and compliance standards

This ensures organizations can adopt conversational analytics without compromising governance.

Why This Matters for Analytics Teams

For many organizations, the biggest barrier to analytics success isn’t data availability—it’s usability.

When tools are complex, adoption suffers.

Reporting Agents aim to address this challenge by making analytics feel more intuitive.

Potential benefits include:

Faster access to insights

Users can locate and interpret information in minutes rather than hours.

Higher analytics adoption

Conversational interfaces make analytics approachable for non-technical users.

Reduced report backlog

Self-service capabilities allow business users to generate basic reports independently.

Better collaboration

Insights can be shared across teams more quickly and easily.

More time for strategic analytics

When routine tasks are automated, analytics teams can focus on higher-value work.
