If your team has been putting off the move to IBM Cognos Analytics 12 because your power users live in Query Studio or Analysis Studio every day, you're not imagining the problem. It's real, and it's final. This time, IBM actually pulled the trigger.Â
The good news: your organization doesn't have to lose the workflows those tools supported. It just has to rebuild them a different way — and that's exactly what we've been doing for clients making the jump.Â
What Actually Happened in Cognos 12Â
Query Studio, Analysis Studio, and Cognos Workspace are no longer part of the product as of Cognos Analytics 12.0.x. This isn't a surprise announcement buried in a webinar — it's documented directly in IBM's own release notes covering deprecated and removed features in the 12.0.x line.Â
If that timeline feels long, it's because it is. IBM first flagged Query Studio and Analysis Studio for eventual retirement back in version 10.2.2, released in 2014. Over the following decade, IBM steadily built out self-service and dashboarding capability meant to absorb the use cases those studios covered. Cognos 12 is where the runway finally ends.Â
For organizations still running 11.2.4 or earlier, there's an added wrinkle: support for those legacy versions ends in April 2026. No more fixes, no more security patches, no more browser or database compatibility updates. Staying on an unsupported version isn't really a strategy — it's a countdown.Â
Why This Hits FP&A Teams Harder Than IT ExpectsÂ
IT tends to treat this as a technical migration. Finance and planning teams experience it very differently.Â
Query Studio has long been the tool analysts reach for when they need a quick, ungoverned pull of data — no waiting on IT, no formal report request, just a fast list report to answer a question before a meeting. Analysis Studio, meanwhile, is where a lot of FP&A users do their dimensional slicing: drilling through hierarchies, comparing actuals to budget across time periods, pivoting data on the fly.Â
Losing both at once means losing the two most “self-service” corners of the Cognos environment — right as IBM is asking users to trust a newer interface for the exact same instincts. That's a real change management problem, not just a licensing one.Â
The Silver Lining: Nothing Is Actually GoneÂ
Here's the part that gets lost in the panic: Query Studio specifications were always simplified versions of full Report Studio (now called Reporting) specifications under the hood. When you convert Query Studio content, you're not starting from zero — you're promoting a mini-spec into the full spec the same engine already understands. IBM even ships a bulk conversion utility in the Cognos installation directory specifically to move Query Studio queries into standard Cognos reports.Â
Analysis Studio doesn't have that same automated bridge, but IBM's own documentation confirms the functional gap can be closed: Cognos 12's interface can be customized to imitate Analysis Studio functionality, and IBM publishes a direct feature-by-feature comparison between Analysis Studio, Query Studio, and what Reporting and Dashboards now cover.Â
In other words — the destination for both retired studios is the same place: Reporting. The question is how well that destination is built out for your users.Â
How Lodestar Solves This: A Reporting Build That Feels Like the Old StudiosÂ
This is where we've spent a lot of our recent client work. Rather than handing end users a stock Reporting interface and a “good luck” email, we've built a customized Reporting experience inside Cognos 12 that replicates the core Query Studio and Analysis Studio workflows your users already know:Â
- Ad hoc, self-service list reports — the fast, no-frills output Query Studio users relied on, rebuilt as guided Reporting templates so analysts aren't starting from a blank canvas.Â
- Dimensional drill and slice behavior — crosstab and hierarchy navigation configured inside Reporting to mimic the Analysis Studio experience, so budget-vs-actual and period-over-period comparisons still feel familiar.Â
- Governed flexibility — users get self-service speed, but content lives inside a properly authored, IT-supported report structure instead of an ungoverned studio object.Â
The result is a Cognos 12 environment where your FP&A team isn't relearning how to think about their work — they're using a new front door on a familiar room.Â
What This Means for Your Upgrade PlanÂ
If you're still on 11.2.4 or earlier, the clock on support is already running. Before you move, it's worth understanding exactly which of your users are still creating new content in Query Studio or Analysis Studio versus consuming existing reports — that distinction changes how much customization and training you actually need. We covered the broader upgrade timeline and what's at stake in our piece on the April 2026 end of support for Cognos 11.2.4, which is a good companion read before you plan your move.Â
Frequently Asked QuestionsÂ
Is IBM really discontinuing Query Studio and Analysis Studio permanently? Yes. Both are removed as of Cognos Analytics 12.0.x, not deprecated-with-a-workaround. There's no toggle to bring them back.Â
Will I lose my existing Query Studio reports when I upgrade? No. Query Studio content converts into standard report specifications using IBM's bulk conversion utility, so existing content isn't lost — it's transformed.Â
Is Report Studio (Reporting) also going away? No. IBM has publicly reaffirmed continued investment in Reporting, and it remains the long-term home for both ad hoc and formal report authoring in Cognos Analytics.Â
Do we have to train every user from scratch on the new interface? Not if the Reporting environment is customized to match your users' existing habits — which is the approach we take with our Cognos 12 transition builds.Â
