IBM Is Embedding AI Into Planning Analytics and Cognos — But Only If You’re on the Latest Version

Written by Heather Cole, CEO of Lodestar Solutions, Inc, May 29th 2026

I just got back from two back-to-back events that honestly changed how I think about the future of finance: IBM Think 2026 in Boston and the Financial Executives International (FEI) Forum. Between the two, I sat in rooms full of the biggest minds in enterprise AI, listened to CFOs reshaping how they lead, and came back with one message I need to get to every IBM Planning Analytics and Cognos customer I know:

IBM is actively embedding AI into the tools you already own. But you can only access it if you're on the latest version.

If you're still running an on-premises or older version of IBM Planning Analytics or Cognos, you are leaving a genuinely transformational capability on the table. Let me tell you what I saw — and what it means for your planning processes right now.

What I Saw at IBM Think 2026 Changed My Perspective on FP&A

IBM Think is not a typical conference. It's a gathering of enterprise technology leaders and practitioners discussing what's actually possible with AI at scale. The core message that resonated throughout every session:

Enterprise needs a completely new operating model built around agents, data automation, and hybrid cloud — not isolated AI experiments, but AI embedded into business operations.

For those of us in FP&A, this isn't abstract. It's already happening inside IBM Planning Analytics.

At the conference, I had a chance to interact with Bob— IBM's AI model-building assistant. I walked up to a kiosk, typed in what a planning model should do, and watched it begin defining dimensions and building out model structure in real time. Is it perfect yet? No. But is it directionally going to change how models get built? Absolutely yes. And that future is coming faster than most people realize.

IBM Planning Analytics Agent: The Shift From Tool to Orchestrator

IBM is in the process of renaming the IBM Planning Analytics Assistant to the IBM Planning Analytics Agent— and that rename is not cosmetic. It reflects a fundamental shift in what the technology does.

We're moving from a tool that responds to queries to an active orchestrator that can initiate and automate tasks — think:

  • “Refresh my forecast”
  • “Identify the top drivers of budget variance”
  • “Notify cost center owners of their actuals”

This is powered by IBM watsonx Orchestrate, IBM's enterprise AI agent platform. These agents can chain tasks, execute workflows, and surface insights — without anyone having to manually run a report or send a Slack message.

If you're on an older or on-premises version of IBM Planning Analytics, you do not have access to these agent capabilities. They are being built into the SaaS platform. This is not a future roadmap item — it is actively being rolled out now

The CFO Effect: Finance Leaders Drive AI ROI

Here's a statistic I saw at a Harvard Business Review webinar that stopped me in my tracks:

76% of AI projects achieve high value when the CFO leads AI accountability** — compared to only 53% when led by a CIO or CTO.

Let that sink in. The Office of Finance, when it takes an active governance role in AI initiatives, nearly doubles the success rate compared to IT-led projects.

And yet, Microsoft research recently found that only 26% of AI users say their leadership is clearly and consistently aligned on their AI strategy. Only 13% say their organizations reward people for reinventing work with AI — even when immediate results aren't guaranteed.

This is your moment. Finance professionals who step up to own AI accountability — who ask “what is our ROI on this initiative?” and “who is accountable for that number?” — are the ones who will define what leadership looks like in the next decade.

Why Being on the Latest IBM Version Is Non-Negotiable

The AI capabilities IBM is building are not being backported to older versions. They are being delivered through the IBM Planning Analytics on Cloud (SaaS) platform, specifically:

  • IBM Planning Analytics Agent (formerly Assistant) — natural language query, task automation, and forecast refresh
  • watsonx integration — enterprise-grade AI governance with explainability and auditability baked in
  • IBM Cognos Analytics with AI— smart pattern detection, automated narrative generation, and anomaly alerts built into governed reporting

IBM has made clearthat the SaaS platform is the primary vehicle for ongoing AI-driven innovation. On-premises customers who delay upgrading are not just missing features — they are falling further behind with every product release.

This matters because the pace of AI advancement inside these tools is accelerating. What felt experimental 12 months ago is now production-ready. What's in the labs today will be generally available before the end of the year.

The Risk of Waiting (And the Risk of Moving Poorly)

At FEI, I spoke with a CFO whose company spent a year and significant resources on an AI initiative projected to reduce labor costs by 25%. After 12 months, the project had not delivered — but the budget had already been built to reflect those savings. The scramble to close that gap was painful and preventable.

The lesson: AI initiatives require financial oversight, not just IT oversight. If you're upgrading to access new AI features, you need a plan for how you'll measure value — not just a technical migration plan.

That's where Lodestar Solutions comes in.

Upgrade Without Risk: Lodestar's IBM Upgrade Bundles

  • Pre-migration assessment — We audit your current environment, identify technical debt, and document your model architecture before a single line of code changes.
  • Phased migration approach — No big-bang cutovers. We move workloads in controlled stages so your team keeps running during the transition.
  • AI readiness review — We evaluate which Planning Analytics Agent and Cognos AI features are immediately applicable to your processes and build an activation roadmap.
  • Finance-led change management— We train your finance team, not just your IT team, so adoption actually sticks.
  • Post-go-live support — We don't disappear after cutover. We stay engaged to help you capture the value you migrated for

Our upgrade bundles are designed for organizations that can't afford disruption but can't afford to stay behind either.

Three Questions to Bring to Your Leadership Team This Week

Whether or not you're ready to upgrade today, these questions will start a conversation that puts finance at the center of your organization's AI strategy:

  1. Can we quantify our total AI value today? What are we spending, what's our anticipated return, and how are we measuring it?
  2. Who in our organization is accountable for that number? Not who is working on it — who owns the outcome?
  3. What are we willing to stop doing to fund AI initiatives? A blank-sheet-of-paper exercise: if you rebuilt your planning process from scratch today, what would you keep?

These questions directly connect to your planning models. And if you're on IBM Planning Analytics, the good news is that the tool you already own is being supercharged to help you answer them — if you're on the version that can access those capabilities

The Bottom Line

AI is not coming to IBM Planning Analytics. It's already there — and getting significantly more powerful with every release. The IBM Planning Analytics Agent, watsonx integration, and Cognos AI features are live and expanding on the SaaS platform.

If you're not on the latest version, you're not just missing features. You're watching your competitors gain access to tools that automate what currently takes your team days to do manually.

Lodestar Solutions specializes in helping IBM Planning Analytics and Cognos customers upgrade and migrate — without risk, without disruption, and with a clear plan to activate the AI capabilities that make the move worth making.
