Stop Running Cognos. Start Using It: Why Cognos Analytics on AWS Deserves a Hard Look

If you've run IBM Cognos Analytics for any length of time, you know the pattern. The reports and dashboards your business relies on keep getting better, and so does the work of keeping the platform itself alive. Servers need patching. Capacity needs planning. Upgrades get scoped, tested, scheduled, delayed, and scoped again. Before long, your team is two or three versions behind, and the newest features, including the AI capabilities everyone is asking about, are on the far side of an upgrade project nobody has time for.

IBM has now given Cognos customers a real way out of that cycle. Cognos Analytics as a Service on AWS reached general availability on August 31, and it's worth a serious conversation for any organization that wants to keep Cognos but stop managing it.

What Cognos Analytics on AWS actually is

This isn't a lift-and-shift of your servers onto someone else's hardware. It is a fully managed SaaS offering that runs natively on AWS, with both the control plane and data plane hosted there, and IBM handling operations, upgrades, and maintenance.

You get the Cognos you already know: pixel-perfect enterprise reporting, interactive dashboards, visualizations, self-service data modeling, governance, and report bursting that sends each recipient their own customized view from a single run. What changes is who carries the operational burden.

Key characteristics include:

  • A dedicated instance. Each customer runs in its own dedicated namespace, which reduces infrastructure-level security exposure and means your critical workloads aren't competing with another customer's.
  • IBM-managed upgrades. Version upgrades and maintenance are automated and handled by IBM, so you stay current without planning a project around it.
  • Enterprise security credentials. SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, plus customer control over production and non-production environments.
  • High availability. Data is replicated across multiple availability zones, and the architecture is built to support thousands of users and complex workloads.
  • AWS Marketplace procurement. Cognos on AWS is purchasable through AWS Marketplace and compatible with existing AWS Enterprise Discount Program (EDP) committed spend.

That last point matters more than it may seem. If your organization has an AWS spend commitment, your Cognos subscription can count toward it, which often turns a new line item into money you've already committed to spend.

Sizing: which plan fits your environment?

IBM has packaged the service in tiers, with two available now and two more on the roadmap.

Standard runs on a 32-CPU / 55 GB RAM cluster, sized for up to 1,000 named users and 40 concurrent users, with 200 GB of database storage and a 99.5% high-availability target.

Premium steps up to a 72-CPU / 128 GB RAM cluster, sized for up to 10,000 named users and 160 concurrent users, with 500 GB of storage and a 99.9% availability target.

Enterprise, targeted for Q1 2027, starts at 72 CPUs / 128 GB and scales from there, with unlimited named users, 200+ concurrent users, and 500 GB+ of storage.

Essentials, targeted for Q2 2027, will round out the lineup at the entry level.

Across Standard, Premium, and Enterprise, you get dashboards, enterprise reporting, report bursting, custom branding, SSO/SAML, AWS IAM authentication, hourly data refresh, and 35-day backup retention. The standard recovery time objective is 24 hours, reducible to 8 hours with the disaster recovery add-on. Add-ons are also available for additional storage and high availability, and the Agentic Edition, which lets you bring your own LLM, is coming soon.

For most mid-sized Cognos shops, Standard or Premium will cover the current footprint comfortably. The right answer depends on your user counts, concurrency patterns, and data volumes, which is exactly what a readiness assessment should nail down.

Why move now

Upgrade debt is a real cost. Customer-managed Cognos environments fall behind because upgrades require planning, testing, downtime coordination, and skilled people. Every version you skip widens the gap between what Cognos can do and what your users actually get. On AWS, IBM keeps you current continuously, so that gap simply stops growing.

AI is arriving, and it arrives faster on SaaS. Cognos BI agents are designed to help users find the right reports, summarize dashboards, author reports in natural language, and share insights, all within your existing governance, security, and permissions. Gartner predicts that half of business decisions will be augmented or automated by AI agents by 2027. Staying on a managed, always-current platform is the most direct route to putting those capabilities in front of your users.

Your team has better things to do. Every hour spent on server maintenance, capacity planning, and patching is an hour not spent building models, improving reports, or helping the business answer questions. IBM cites 40% faster resource provisioning with managed analytics. Moving the platform work off your plate is the point.

Cloud strategy is converging on AWS. If your data already lives in AWS, co-locating your analytics with it reduces latency and simplifies architecture. And as analytics vendors increasingly go cloud-first, cloud editions are where new functionality tends to land first.

Handling the objections

“We've invested years in our reports and models. We can't start over.”
You don't have to. This is Cognos, not a replacement product. The path is designed to preserve your existing reporting, governance, and the business trust you've built. The work is a migration, not a rebuild, and a proper readiness assessment will identify anything that needs attention before you move.

“Is it secure enough for our data?”
You get a dedicated instance in its own namespace, SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 compliance, SSO/SAML and AWS IAM authentication, and control over your production and non-production environments. For many organizations, that's a stronger security posture than they maintain on-premises today.

“We'll lose control over when upgrades happen.”
What you lose is the upgrade project: the planning, testing cycles, and downtime coordination. What you gain is a platform that's always current. For most teams, the trade is overwhelmingly worth it.

“Budget is already committed.”
If that commitment is with AWS, Marketplace procurement and EDP compatibility may let Cognos draw from spend you've already agreed to. Factor in the infrastructure, hardware, and administration costs you retire, and the comparison often looks very different than the sticker price suggests.

“We're not on AWS” or “Our region isn't available yet.”
The service currently runs in AWS US East, with additional regions targeted for 2027. If data residency is a requirement, now is the right time to plan so you're ready as regions come online.

“Is it ready for enterprise scale?”
Cognos is trusted by 7 of the top 10 global banks and 3 of the top 5 global insurers and telecommunications companies. The AWS service is built for thousands of users and global deployments, with multi-zone replication behind it.

Your next step

You don't need to commit to a migration to start the conversation. The smart first move is a discovery discussion that covers feature availability for your use cases, pricing and licensing options, your migration and SaaS readiness, AWS Marketplace procurement, and where the agentic AI capabilities fit your roadmap.

Lodestar Solutions has spent years helping Cognos customers upgrade, optimize licensing, and move to the cloud. We can help you size the right plan, map your current environment, and build a migration path that keeps your users productive the whole way through.

You've already built the analytics your business trusts. Now it's time to stop babysitting the platform underneath it. Contact Lodestar to schedule your Cognos on AWS discovery session.
