The Importance of Renewing License Support with IBM?

Renewing License Support with IBM

I get it.  Your IBM Cognos system has been up and running for years and is stable.  You are not having any issues and all is good.  Then you receive the invoice for renewing license support with IBM.  You think, "why do I need to renew when everything is good"?  The other situation I hear often is based around the end of support on an older version of IBM Cognos software and why should I upgrade when everything is running stable and I have no issues?  Read on to find out why renewing license support with IBM is extremely important!

My IBM Cognos System is Stable, Why Should I  Renew?

You have stable IBM Cognos system and decide to not renew to save a little money.  Then all of a sudden you come in one day and boom - you cant access the system, your report is not running or you cant push the info to excel like normal.  What happened?  You troubleshoot the system with your administrator and you find out that Microsoft has updated the server with a patch or office with a new version.  The good news is that you found the issue and that IBM has a fix for it.  The bad news, you didn't renew support and you no longer have access to updates or fixes from IBM.   What do you do now?   You are left with one choice, to reinstate your software support... at a MUCH higher cost than you would have paid in the normal renewal cycle.

IBM Announced End of Support for My Version, Why Should I Renew?

The same story and reason above apply to this situation.  However, there is another reason to continue support.  You will be entitled to the newest version of the software that is currently in support.  For instance, you are running Cognos BI 10.2.2 (which end of support occurred in April 2018) and your renewal bill is due and you are thinking, "we do not plan to upgrade and everything is running fine or we are reviewing other options, I'm not going to renew".  I strongly caution against thinking it isn't worth renewing for these reasons. Frankly, for any reason other than you plan to move away from that software prior to your renewal bill being due.  The cost for not renewing is FAR greater than paying the support bill for 1 more year.  Speaking of upgrades, check out our Cognos Analytics upgrade page at https://lodestarsolutions.com/ibm-cognos-analytics-upgrade/

Software Lifecycle – When does IBM Cognos BI Support for 10.2.x end?

4/8/2017
IBM Cognos BI 10.2.x - is it ending?

Recently, we found out that IBM Cognos BI support for 10.2.x was ending on April 30, 2018.  What does this exactly mean?  As you can see here on the IBM site, a number of different products have an EOS (end of service) date of April 30, 2018 as well as the type of support ending is enhanced.  Again, what does this mean?

When support ends for IBM products, you basically have two options.  1. Upgrade to the newest version or 2. purchase a support extension.

Upgrade

The first option is to upgrade.  In this case, Cognos Analytics or Cognos 11 is the option available.    Here is some info to help you get started with Cognos Analytics.

  1. Lodestar's Upgrade Evaluation Tool Kit - We have created a toolkit to help you evaluate your move to Cognos Analytics.  Check out our blog and sign up for the toolkit by clicking on the link above.
  2. Overview blog of Cognos Analytics - Check out this blog on the first release of Cognos Analytics.
  3. Cognos analytics is now on release 6.  IBM continues to add more and more features to an already great product with each release.  Check out this blog on release 6.
  4. Also, I wanted to provide a link to our Cognos Club.  This special area on our website is 100% free and contains great info on Cognos Analytics, TM1, and many other items.
IBM Cognos BI Support
Support Extension

If you are not ready to upgrade to the newest version of the software, you have the ability to purchase a support extension through IBM.  A couple items of note with this option.  The support is likely to cost more than your current support and you will not receive any product updates.    You will receive support for any product bugs and other items.  However as I mentioned, it comes with a cost and no future enhancements.

Now that you have your options, what do you do now?  Contact Lodestar Solutions to discuss these options!  For an upgrade quote, contact services@lodestarsolutions.com.  For support extensions, contact support@lodestarsolutions.com.  We can save you time and money!

What do you mean, My Cognos licenses expired?

What do you mean, My Cognos licenses expired?

For those of you who have been taking advantage of price savings by moving your IBM licenses to an IBM Passport Advantage Agreement (PA#), you may run into this situation.  IBM has changed the way they have been emailing notices for your licenses that are due to expire.  Instead of sending the email 75 days prior to the expiration of the license, they are sending out the email 75 days prior to your PA# Anniversary Date.  This could result in IBM licenses that are expiring prior to the Anniversary Date being left in the lurch.  I have not seen IBM put a client in the position they have to have the expired license reinstated and pay a penalty.  However, it could put you in a precarious position when you attempt to log a support ticket by finding out your license is flagged as expired.  During a time when you need their support, the last thing you need is to jump through hoops to get IBM to manually authorize an extension for support.  As we all know, this will only happen at the most inconvenient time possible and will only add more stress to the problem that is requiring you to log a support ticket.

In essence, keep track of IBM licenses that expire mid-term and follow up with your Business Partner to see if you might run into this situation.

As an additional reminder, make sure that your Primary and Secondary contacts authorized with IBM are current.  Only the Primary is allow to download software and updates, authorize the Secondary to be able to log support requests and will be the only one to receive notice of license expirations.  Many clients forget when an employee is moving to a different position or is leaving the company to have this updated before that occurs.
